August 12, 2008: Namasale Sub County security authority in Amolatar district has netted about 3 people for persistently using the illegal fishing gears and burnt more than 80 undersized nets over the weekend. Local people said they tipped security personnel after realizing that some unknown group of fishermen from Nakasongoloa were using illegal fishing gears locally known as Kokota.

According to Namasale Sub County LC3 chairperson Pule Magendo Kokochal who is leading the operation to crackdown all illegal and undersized fishing nets, the three would be prosecuted according to the laws of this country.

He further disclosed that they have since early this year been sounding series of strong warnings to the fishermen against the use of undersized nets.

They were netted during the ongoing operation targeting to reduce the rampant use of prohibited methods of fishing in the areas.

Late last month the district fisheries officer Otunga Anthony told press that following a week long intensive operations conducted by the Amolatar district authorities in Lakes Kwania and Kyoga about one hundred local residents have been arrested for fishing using illegal gears.

Nearly 80% of Amolatar and other area surrounding Lakes Kyoga and Kwania earn a living from fishing. They normally use prohibited ways of fishing like monofilament nets (kamba maji), Sein nets locally popular as Kokota, and beating water with “tycoon” while fishing among other outlawed ways.
