Police in Lira are holding two street kids for allegedly stabbing a woman with a knife and robbing her of money and other belongings.
Rita Kabwo from Kasese District was attacked at around 8pm on Thursday and stabbed by two street kids Joseph Abella who comes from Abim district and his colleague Opio Adinga whose parents are Lira Town residents. Police says the teenagers also wanted to rape the lady.
Kabwo was rescued by Patrol police unit who rushed to the scene at Te-Kulu Village Ojwina Division, in response to alarms and made by the victim.
The acting Criminal Investigations Department officer at Lira Central Police Station, IAP Marino Ocaya says police will forward the teenagers to court after investigations are finalized.
He urged clan leaders of street children in Lira Town to identify their members and take them home.
Street Children in Lira are notorious of stealing valuables such as vehicle engines, utensils, and metals for sale to get money for food besides staging robberies along corridors especially on ladies.
Of late they have developed a new technique of ordering money from corridor uses by threatening to throw human excretions they carry in white polythene bags on whoever fails to succumb to their demands.
Non-governmental Organizations such as UNICEF have been battling street kids’ growing population in the town by sending them back to their parents or guardians but they bounce back to town.
Police have always failed to take necessary steps against the juveniles due to lack of juvenile detention centre in the district and the entire northern Uganda.
