Almost a half of Lango College students in Lira district have been suspended for participating in a sit-down strike over inadequate teaching.
The students, mostly from final year classes, went on strike protesting against inadequate teaching in the school. They were later joined by students from lower classes.
All students have been asked to re-apply for fresh admission before the beginning of second term.
Some students have blamed the school authority for having not properly investigated the allegation that some students were plotting to burn down the school.
Head prefect Walter Ochen said most of the suspended students never participated in the strike, adding that it was the candidate classes that went on strike. He expressed fears after he was also served with suspension letter and told to reapply.
The students interviewed denied plotting to burn school, maintaining that they were only protesting against sub-standard teaching due to staff shortage following the sacking of part-time teachers.
Alfred Okello, the college head teacher, reportedly recommended the suspension of over 200 students indefinitely while others were asked to reapply for fresh admission.
Lira district RDC Joan Pacotto has expressed intention to investigate the circumstances under which almost a half of the students were suspended.
The RDC says they deployed security personnel at Lango College to quell a strike at the end of last term.
Inadequate teaching is becoming a common source of student strike. Early last term a section of Lira Town College students also went on strike for a similar reason.

How do students start under rating teachers? Alumini should do some panel beatings. Students of these days don’t know their goals. It is not like our days in 80’s when we could concentrate. Nowadays, what our children from Lira (Lango) know is, watching football, going for discos etc, but not concentrating on books which in our days was of no big deal. There are no such competitions these days like debating, science fair, etc as it used to be. A dormant mind ……………..
i think those people were charmed
